When Geoff Lawson started his cricket career in the last days of 1980, he couldn’t really imagine to be coach one day. But now he is a coach of Pakistan cricket team for two years after defeating Dave Whatmore and some other big names in the contest. Some are terming his appointement as the fulfillment of the Pakistani players, who wanted a not-so-stern coach, and wanted to keep their “freedom” intact. Mellow by nature, meek and docile Geoff Lawson was always the first priority of the players. Though board was more inclined towards Dave Whatmore, but players and their lobbyists won atlast, and we have now Lawson as their coach.
Pakistani former players have also shown mixed reactions. Sarfraz Nawaz has as usual labelled Lawson’s appointment as the yet another conspiracy of gambling mafia, and stressed on the need of a national coach. He also put forwarded the names of Javed Miandad and Aamir Sohail. Imran Khan has shown his satisfaction over the decision, and has termed the assignment of Lawson as a good step for the future of team. Javed Miandad who was a strong candidate for the coach, but wasn’t even included in the race of becoming a coach, showed his disappointment, but he once again showed a big heart, and promised Lawson his full support. He said that he was and is available always for the service of Pakistani cricket. Along with Intikhab Alam, Javed Miandad wasn’t too excited about the engagement of Lawson as coach, they both asserted that Lawson as a foreigner couldn’t fathom the ins and outs of Pakistani nature and he couldnt also be patriotic, and games needs a patriotic passion.
Docile Lawson didn’t answered the aggression with aggression, rather he asked for support from the former players, especially from Javed Miandad. He said in an interview,”I’d like to get Javed on board to be part of the coaching crew, to be part of the system and help out, because he was an outstanding player and a tough bloke as well. We could do with a few of those characteristics among the guys at the moment. I’m hoping to talk to all those people and see what contributions they can make. We can’t control outside influences but it would be good if we could have some of those outside influences being positive.”
Now as the Lawson has taken over the reigns of coaching, he should be supported by all factions; the players, the board, the media, former players, and the people. If we can pay him 80 lacs a year, we can also provide him our maximum support.More on:Aamir Sohail, Bob Woolmer, Dav Whatmore, Geoff Lawson, Imran Khan, Intikhab Alam, javed miandad, Pakistan, PCB, Sarfaraz Nawaz
