Shoaibs, Shahid Yousuf named in ODI squad
Pakistan are expected to return to their winning ways with the return of several top players including speedster Shoaib Akhtar and prolific opener Shoaib Malik, a team official said on Sunday.
The tourists announced their 16-member squad for the five match One-day International (ODI) series and a Twenty20 match against England that includes the two Shoaibs and uncapped batsman Shahid Yousuf. Also in the line-up is fit-again medium pacer Rana Naved ul-Hasan who missed the Test series because of a groin injury but is back in the squad after regaining full fitness.
“We would be much stronger than in the Tests and are looking forward to a better show in the one-day series,” the team manager Zaheer Abbas told this correspondent.
Pakistan have overlooked fast bowler Mohammad Sami, middle order batsman Faisal Iqbal and medium pacer Shahid Nazir. The trio featured in the Test series but was not needed for the one-dayers and would thus be released from the squad after the fourth Test.
Sami was unable to impress much in the three Tests he played while Faisal Iqbal’s only fifty of the series came in the last match when it was a bit too late for him to survive. Shahid Nazir made a good comeback to the Test arena but Pakistani selectors believed he was not needed in a pace battery that includes Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Rana Naved, Umar Gul and Abdul Razzaq. Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved were certain to return after recovering from injury problems.
Shoaib recovered from a stress fracture of the ankle after staying away from international cricket following a Test appearance against India in Karachi in January.
Shoaib Malik, who was a part of the original touring party but returned home because of an elbow problem, is back after being passed fit.
The only surprise was the inclusion of the 20-year-old Shahid Yousuf in place of Faisal Iqbal. The Sialkot-born youngster has had a successful domestic season and was one of the few success stories for Pakistan A on its tour of Australia earlier this summer. Mohammad Hafeez, who made his Test return at The Oval with a superb 95, also earned a place on the one-day squad.
Pakistan will warm-up for the ODI series with a Twenty20 against England in Bristol on August 28 before meeting the hosts in the first ODI on August 30 in Cardiff.
Pakistan squad: Inzamam-ul-Haq (captain), Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Malik, Imran Farhat, Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Yousuf, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal (wicket-keeper), Shoaib Akhtar, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Rao Iftikhar, Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul and Danish Kaneria.
