Shoaib Malik available for England one-dayers

The Pakistani management has welcomed the news of opener Shoaib Malik’s return to fitness and believe his comeback in the national team would boost the visitors’ chances in the five-match ODI series against England.

Coach Bob Woolmer told reporters on Friday evening that he got a call from chief selector Wasim Bari saying that Malik has passed a fitness test and is available for selection for the one-dayers. “Its good news because we really missed Shoaib in the Test series,” said Woolmer.

Shoaib, Pakistan’s most successful opener in recent times, was forced to return home before the start of the Test series against England last month after facing an elbow problem.

His absence from the Tests was seen as one of the reasons behind Pakistan’s opening woes in a contest that they lost after going down at Old Trafford and Headingley. “Bari said that Shoaib has been declared fully fit after passing several tests and is available for the one-dayers,” told Woolmer.

Pakistan have already sent back out-of-form openers Salman Butt and Taufeeq Umar but called Mohammad Hafeez to reinforce the batting. Hafeez, playing his first Test since 2003, scored an attractive 95 in Pakistan’s first innings in the fourth Test against England at The Oval on Friday.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official said on Saturday that Shoaib Malik would join the touring party here within the next few days. “Shoaib Malik is a key player for us and we are happy that he is returning to the team,” PCB’s Director of Board Operations Abbas Zaidi said.
