Shoaib fined for spat with Woolmer

Maverick fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been fined by the Pakistan manager Talat Ali following his spat with team coach Bob Woolmer during the second Test against South Africa in Port Elizabeth last week.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official told this correspondent that Talat conducted an internal inquiry into the incident that was beamed across the world by sports channels and decided to fine Shoaib for misconduct. The official refrained from giving any further details.

“It was an internal matter of the team and we do not want to turn into any kind of a major issue,” said the official. “An inquiry has been conducted and the player involved has been fined by the team manager. Apart from that we would want to keep focus on the cricket, especially after our team recorded a very memorable win against a tough South African side,” added the official.

Pakistan won the second Test by five wickets on Monday to level the three-match series 1-1 and one of the heroes of the memorable victory was Shoaib. Shoaib was shown exchanging hot words with Woolmer on the second day of the second Test in Port Elizabeth on television.

Later that day, Shoaib, who took four wickets in the first innings to help Pakistan skittle out the hosts, did not bowl in the second innings because of a hamstring injury. His absence from the field sparked rumours that the bowler may have refused to bowl after his fracas with Woolmer.

However, it was later confirmed that Shoaib tore a hamstring muscle while bowling on the opening day and may also be suffering from a recurrence of a knee injury. He and medium pacer Umar Gul, who is suffering from an ankle injury, are scheduled to return home later this week.
