Shoaib Akhtar’s surprise appearance at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) on Friday caused a headache for his namesake, the Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik.
Malik abruptly left a press conference in Lahore after being bombarded with questions about the discarded fast bowler’s presence at the nets session. It was apparent that Malik had no idea who invited Shoaib to attend the training session held in preparation for the final one-dayer against Zimbabwe to be played in Sheikhupura today.
Shoaib claimed that he was asked to attend the training session by Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson. Malik refrained from answering queries fired by media people about Shoaib’s presence at the training session and just commented that it was good to know that the pacer is making efforts to make his international return.
“It’s good too see him (Shoaib) in action and we hope that all our fast bowlers including Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul will get fully fit before the important series against Australia,” he said.
Asif is currently recovering from an elbow surgery while Gul, who was dogged by a back problem on the tour of India last year, missed the Zimbabwe series after failing to attain full match fitness.
