Shoaib Akhtar, who was the first to sign the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) central contract, turned down the most lucrative offer the Indian Cricket League (ICL) has made to any cricket star around the world.
According to sources close to the speedster, he turned down a Rs 120 million offer to play for the ICL for the next three years. “ICL made the highest offer to the speedster. No other player got even close to him. He was offered Rs 120 million to figure in the League engagements for the next three years,” a source close to the player said.
When Shoaib was contacted he confirmed that he had got an offer with him when he signed the contract with the PCB. “I would not reveal to you the figures but they said it was the highest made to a professional cricketer,” he said.
It has been learnt that most of others including Mohammad Yousuf, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Asif were offered about half that amount.
“Shoaib was given the highest offer almost at par with some of the leading Indian cricketers. However, he immediately turned down the offer and without giving it a lengthy consideration, he refused to join the league that has got no official backing,” Shoaib’s close associate said.
He said even if Shoaib was offered Rs 1000 million he would not have considered deserting the country as he takes pleasure and pride in playing Pakistan.
“Shoaib takes pride in representing the country and even if he had been offered a bigger amount he would not have considered that unless and until the International Cricket Council (ICC) or Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) allowed it.”
Meanwhile, it has also been learnt that Pakistan players who are on the verge of retirement were offered lesser amounts than those who are active.
“Since Shoaib is a superstar and has got the charisma to attract the crowds in every Test playing country, he has been given such a huge offer.”
Shahid Khan Afridi is the other national star who got a very lucrative offer but preferred to continue playing for the country. Afridi who is also considered a big crowd puller was amongst the players who have got the best offers.
“I think all those who rejected the offer should be given credit. They are the true ambassadors of the country and Pakistan players and nation are proud of them,” a former Test cricketer said.
