The initial reaction from the Pakistan Cricket Board, and from the President of Pakistan, who is the patern-in-chief of PCB was very stern, in the wake of that notorious incident, in which Pakistan’s premier pacer Shoaib Akhtar hit his co-bowler Mohammad Asif with a heavy bat, and then indulged in a verbal brawl with Shahid Afridi. To add more to his woes, Shoaib did couple of press conferences and lashed at team management and the players of team.
His conduct not only defame the good name of the country across the world, but also exposed the weak grip of team management over the team affairs. It also exposed the dismal situation of harmony and good relationships between the players. Where it also told many inside stories of team, it also provided a chance to PCB to mend the ways in the team. The initial impression was that Shoaib’s career is finished and he wouldn’t be bowling from Pakistan in the future ever.
But due to the lack of a serious stingy bowling attack, and the weak bowling performance in Twenty20 world cup and then a very pathetic performance in the home test series against South Africa, PCB revised its decision and directed its chief operating officer Dr. Naghmi to play down the matter and dont slap a lifetime ban over Shoaib Akhtar. So with luck, Rawalpindi Express gets a token ban of 13 matches (including Twenty20s, ODIs, and Test matches), which would start from the Twenty20 world cup, and so this way Shoaib would be available for the last ODI against South Africa. The three member disciplinary committee of PCB also fined Shoaib for 3.4 million rupees.
Dr. Nasim Ashraf has also expressed his hope that in future Shoaib Akhtar will try to be a normal human being, and he also told media that PCB is planning to send Shoaib to a psychologist, because he needs it badly. Chairman PCB, said that he believes that this will not only help in making Shoaib realizing about his blunder, but also will set a good precedence for others in the team, and also for the players of posterity.
Shoaib Akhtar, during the press conference was looking dejected and defeated. His usual stubborness, smugness and stupid aggression was no where to be seen. He said to media in a low voice that he has spent the last one month in sheer tension, and it was a bad time. He also said that he is sorry about what happened in South Africa and is ashamed over his conduct and he also asked for forgiveness from nation and Mohammad Asif, though he didnt say a word about Shahid Khan Afridi. It was strange, because Shoaib was telling it again and again that the real problem was Shahid Afridi, who ridiculed him, and that is why he went out of control.
Anyway, due to luck or pressure, Shoaib gets another chance, perhaps his last one. He says that he is committed to deliver this time. He said that the forthcoming Indian tour will be his last tour, which was little sad, because Shoaib has always been a hype, and never really delivered at his optimum, and nation is yet to see his any landmark performance.More on:Dr. Nasim Ashraf, Mohammad Asif, Pakistan, PCB, Pervez Musharraf, Shafqat Naghmi, Shoaib Akhtar
