Selection committee to make decision over Mushtaq

The Pakistan cricket team manager Zaheer Abbas on Friday supported the controversial idea of veteran leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed making a return to the national squad in the Test series against England later this summer.

But he also made it clear that the national selection committee can only make the decision over Mushtaq’s return to the Pakistan line-up.

“I believe in the current circumstances, Mushtaq can be good for the team,” said the former Test cricketer referring to an expected absence due to injury of pacers Shoaib Akhtar and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan for the Test series getting underway with the first match at Lords from July 13.

Pakistan are pondering over the idea of bringing back Mushtaq to boost their bowling attack if Shoaib and Rana are ruled out of the Test series because of fitness problems.

Skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq has floated the idea though it has its opponents in the national cricket set-up. Zaheer, however, is not one of them.

“Mushtaq has a lot of experience and has been bowling pretty well in county matches in England this season,” he told ‘The News’. “He could be a good option to fill in for Rana if the medium pacer is forced out of the series because of a groin injury.”

“But I must say that it is one decision that our selectors should take. It would be up to them whether they would want to recall Mushtaq,” he pointed out.

Zaheer pointed out that Sri Lanka recently carved out a memorable Test win against England on the basis of a match-winning performance from their spin ace Muthiah Muralitharan.

Mushtaq, who turns 36 later this month, has not figured in any of Pakistan’s Test campaign since an unimpressive outing against South Africa in 2003.
