Sarwan still sidelined in second Test

sarwanWest Indies started the second day of the second Test against England here at Headingley on Saturday without captain Ramnaresh Sarwan.

The tourists’ skipper will not field for the remainder of England’s first innings and won’t bat in West Indies first innings, team spokesman, Imran Khan, told reporters here on Saturday.

Sarwan injured his right shoulder while falling heavily over a boundary rope as he tried to prevent a four on the first day’s play here on Friday.

He used a jumper as a sling and left the field immediately prior to going to hospital for scans.

The scan revealed that although the shoulder was not dislocated, Sarwan had sustained a severe injury near his collarbone.

The spokesman said more scan results were required before deciding if Sarwan could take any further part in this match.

West Indies, who drew the first Test of this four-match series at Lord’s, were already without one of their senior batsmen for this encounter when experienced left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul dropped out of the side before the Headingley clash got underway with tendonitis in his right knee.

“We still don’t know what the scans will reveal but we are very optimistic he will be able to join us in this game,” said West Indies vice-captain Daren Ganga. “We are going to remain optimistic until we hear what’s happening.”

The laws of cricket mean West Indies will only have 10 batsmen in the first innings, as substitutes cannot bat or bowl.
