Sarwan seals West Indies success

sarwanThe captain Ramnaresh Sarwan guided West Indies to an easy six-wicket win over Bermuda in their opening match of the Associates Tri-series in Canada. Sarwan ended the contest with a six over midwicket to finish on 49, sweeping his team past Bermuda’s 158 for 9 with 18.1 overs to spare, while the debutant Brendan Nash collected a cautious 27 not out.

The chase started with a couple of difficulties for West Indies, who lost Xavier Marshall to the second ball before Sewnarine Chattergoon went for 7 in the fourth over. However, Leon Johnson, who struck 27 off 28 deliveries in his first game, and Shawn Findlay (41 off 35) quickly lifted the rate and put the team on track for a comfortable success.

A second half-century of the tournament for Chris Douglas was the only real highlight of Bermuda’s innings. Despite having an under-manned attack due to a back injury to Fidel Edwards, West Indies were able to capture regular wickets.

Nikita Miller, the left-arm spinner, was the most dangerous with 3 for 19, including the dismissal of Douglas for 53, while Kemar Roach, another debutant, picked up 2 for 29 with his fast-mediums. Douglas was the eighth batsman to fall and it was left to Dwayne Leverock, who posted an unbeaten 20, to expand the small total. West Indies’ next match is against Canada on Friday before the final on Sunday.
