Rana to undergo fitness test next week

Pakistan’s injured pacer Rana Naved-ul-Hasan would know whether he would be able to join the team for any of the Tests against England this summer when he undergoes a fitness test next week in England.

Rana has been told by a specialist that he will need a surgery for his groin injury but it still remains unclear whether he would be able to feature in the second Test to be played from July 27 at Old Trafford, Manchester.

He needs to go through a fitness test which would be carried out in Canterbury where Pakistan are scheduled to play a three-day game against England A from July 6.

Rana suffered from a groin injury while playing for Sussex in a county game in May. He was named in a 16-man touring party for the series against England but was later excluded from the squad after it became clear that his injury was quite serious.

He is being treated by a British specialist, Dr Gilmore, and is expected to resume running within the next couple of weeks.

While chances are that Rana would be able to play in the second or third Test, it is quite apparent that he will not be match fit to make the playing eleven for the Test getting underway at Lord’s from July 13.

Young left-arm medium pacer Samiullah Niazi and veteran leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed are the top candidates to replace Rana for the opening Test.
