Playing Bangladesh is better than not playing: Shoaib Malik

malikPakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik said on Monday that playing Bangladesh in a one-day series is better than not playing at all.

“It is good to play cricket rather not playing and after the postponement of the Australia team’s tour to Pakistan we will be playing Bangladesh in a make-shift series and for us it is satisfying that we are playing international cricket rather than not being part of it,” he told APP here.

Pakistan and Bangladesh play the first match of a five-match One-day International series here on Tuesday. “We have been deprived of high quality international cricket after the postponement of the Australian tour and now it’s time for the team to re-start its journey from where it left by experiencing the flavour of competitive cricket,” he added.

Shoaib Malik was of the view that this tour will help in many ways re-establishing Pakistan’s reputation as a safe venue for cricket, bringing fans back to the grounds to watch international cricket and most importantly helping the team to assess its performance level.

“The team was in a lay-off for a few months and playing Bangladesh we will know where we stand and definitely this series is a tough challenge for us like any other top cricket competition,” he said.

“For us it a serious cricket affair and as a captain my ambition is to maintain winning ways in this event,” he added. The Pakistan cricket captain said he is confident of his team’s good showing in the series and all the players were in the same mood.

He dismissed a question that Bangladesh were “underdogs” and winning against an under-strength young team will be an easy task. “I do not believe in this phenomenon, look at the track record of Bangladesh they are known for their giant killing acts and we do not want to a victim of a similar fate,” he said.

“It is time to gear up for a cricket activity which demands a higher display of skills and hard work and we must avail this home series for the build up of our team for the coming events like Asia Cup and Champions Trophy in the next few months,” he said.

Malik said he wants to inspire the team by excelling as an all-rounder and to be a role model for the team members. He supported the idea of fielding young players against Bangladesh saying “we successfully did this experiment against Zimbabwe in a home series and we should induct a few young players in the side to replace the injured or out of form players.”

The captain termed Bangladesh a young side which has the quest to do better with each passing day and they have shown a tendency of beating top teams which gives them the status of an “emerging dangerous team”.“We will be taking care of this aspect because it is always better to do your home work before going into the field to take the opposition,” he said.
