Pakistan would ask Zimbabwean cricket authorities to postpone their team’s tour of Pakistan this September till 2008 after it became apparent that African minnows carry no charm for sponsors here.
Shaharyar Khan, Chairman PCB, said on Wednesday he would also write to the ICC to call off the tour on which Zimbabwe were scheduled to play three ODIs.
Pakistan had earlier proposed to host three ODIs against Zimbabwe in September just after their team returned from the tour of England. But now they are having a change of mind after it became clear that the PCB does not stand to earn much from such an exercise.
According to Shaharyar, television rights holders and potential sponsors have shown a complete lack of interest in the series against Zimbabwe, which is a major reason why Pakistan have become convinced to get the series called off.
Another reason why Pakistan want to postpone the series is because they want the national team players to get some rest after the tour of England.
Shaharyar said the PCB would soon write to the Zimbabwean cricket authorities to postpone the series which could later be adjusted in Pakistan’s calendar of activities in 2008.
