PCB not keen to host ODIs against Zimbabwe

Pakistan is not keen to host the Zimbabwe team, only for a one-day series this year despite a request from the African nation.

According to ‘The News’ , after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sent a letter to the crisis ridden Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) informing them that they were not in favour of hosting the African nation only for a one-day series this year, the ZCU has asked them to reconsider their decision.

“The ZCU wants us to host them for a five match one-day series this year after they suspended their team from playing Test cricket until February 2007. But since, originally, we were to host them for a full tour of Tests and ODIs, we feel that it would be better if they now tour Pakistan in 2007 and play a full series,” a PCB official said on condition of anonymity.

The ZCU after facing a widespread boycott by its leading players who went on a strike last year to protest against their administration and selection policies, suspended its team from playing Test cricket until February 2007 on the plea that it didn’t want to field under strength sides in Test matches. But the Zimbabwe team continues to play one dayers.

“While the ZCU’s decision is their own, but we in Pakistan feel it is not viable for us to host them for just one-dayers this year when we also have the West Indies touring for three Tests and three one-day games,” the official said.

“We are already facing a backlog of Tests against Zimbabwe because when they toured in 2004, they didn’t play any Tests and just took part in the triangular series with Sri Lanka. So we have suggested them not to tour this year, but to come next year when they resume their Test cricket status and play a full series of three matches and five ODIs,” he explained.

But he said that the ZCU was still insistent on coming to play just the one-day games. “We have yet to reply to their latest query but if they don’t agree to our proposal then we might have to play three Tests against the West Indies and then organize a triangular series involving them and Zimbabwe this year,” he said.

The West Indies team is scheduled to visit Pakistan from November 7 onwards after the Champions Trophy ends in India on the 6th.

The official said that a final decision on Zimbabwe’s tour would most probably be taken at the meeting of the chief executives in Dubai next month.
