Pakistan turns down South Africa proposal to play seven ODIs

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has turned down a proposal by the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) to play seven One-day Internationals (ODIs) on Pakistan team’s tour to the African country there early next year before the World Cup.

A PCB official said South Africa had proposed that due to time constraints Pakistan should play seven ODIs instead of a Test and one-day series. Pakistan, under the Future Tours Programme (FTP), is scheduled to play three Tests and three ODIs in South Africa in January-February next year.

But as the PCB, on the advice of captain Inzamam-ul-Haq and coach Bob Woolmer, had requested the UCBSA to end the tour by February 15 the latest to allow the players time to rest before the World Cup, the official said the South Africans came up with the alternate. “But we’ve rejected that proposal as we are keen to play our quota of Tests in South Africa before the World Cup.”

He also made it clear that although Pakistan and India had promised the West Indies board they would involve them in some matches to be staged in North America next year to help boost their earnings and development, it was not in a position to play these games before the World Cup.

About the six-year FTP cycle announced on Tuesday by the ICC in which Pakistan, despite being the number four team in Test rankings has been given only 53 to 54 Tests and 117 to 143 ODIs until 2012, the official said Pakistan had the option of expanding its programme in the FTP in consultation with other teams. “We’ve the option of adding more matches to our calendar in the FTP in conjunction with other teams,” he explained.

“The FTP draft documents were prepared at least ten times before the member boards reached a consensus but teams can change their schedules or add matches according to their requirements with the consent of other teams,” he added.
