ICL: Indian Cricket League

Pakistan to support official Twenty20 league

Pakistan will throw their weight behind a proposed international twenty20 league that is aimed to counter the threat of the breakaway Indian Cricket League (ICL) at a meeting of top cricket officials in New Delhi later this week.

Nasim Ashraf, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), told this correspondent on Monday that he will attend an important meeting on September 13 in the Indian capital adding that there are hopes that details of an official T20 league will be finalised at the moot.

“Chiefs of cricket boards of leading cricket-playing nations will attend the meeting in which various proposals for the launching of an international twenty20 league will be discussed,” he said.

Ashraf said that the proposed league will be lucrative for the participating players and attractive for cricket fans all over the world. He said that once details of the league are finalised then the International Cricket Council (ICC) will be approached for official recognition.

He rejected the idea that the league has been planned to counter the growing threat of the rebel ICL saying that several countries have been planning to start a twenty20 league for quite some time.

He said that the PCB will fully back the idea and will also offer its complete support for the proposed league during the meeting in New Delhi. “We have been hosting Twenty20 tournaments for more than two years now and have plenty of experience when it comes to this format of the game,” he said.
