Pakistan climbs up to No 2 in Test rankings

Pakistan on Wednesday climbed up the ICC Test rankings’ ladder to a best-ever second position but the skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq said that the move would have little impact on the opening Test against England getting underway here from today.

“Its good that we have moved up in the rankings,” Inzamam told reporters on the eve of the first Test. “But I have never believed that rankings really matter. You can win a Test match on the basis of your team’s performance and not how good or bad it is ranked,” remarked Inzamam.

Pakistan were rewarded with a second position that has taken them to a striking distance behind Australia for winning their last three Test series. They have 120 points, seven more than England who have slipped down in the rankings after a spate of unimpressive results following their historic triumph against old rivals Australia in the Ashes at home last summer.

Inzamam said that he was pleased with the improvement in Pakistan’s Test ranking and attributed it to a team effort from his boys. “I’ve always said that cricket is a team game and all your players have to deliver to win the matches,” he said.

Inzamam, who is now one of the more successful skippers Pakistan have had, said that his team’s second position was a true reflection of their current status in Test cricket. “We have been working hard as a team in recent seasons and the results have now begun to show that,” he remarked.

Pakistan outclassed England 2-0 at home last winter and then went on to beat India and Sri Lanka earlier this year. Inzamam said that he would like to continue this winning run in England this summer. “Winning a Test series always boosts your confidence,” he said.
