After the departure of sacrificial goat, the former chief selector Waseem Bari, who was doing his job just for the “national interest” without taking any salary, Pakistan Cricket Board has come up with a new paid selection committee, spear-headed by Salahuddin Sallu.
This is the first time in Pakistan cricket’s history that a paid selection committee for the national team is setup. Along with chairman selection committee Salahuddin Sallu (a.k.a Sallu Bhai), other members include Shafqat Rana and Saleem Jaffer. Profiles of all these three are not new to cricket buffs and these three have also serviced Pakistani cricket before.
Salahuddin Sallu has held many positions in the board over the years, Shafqat Rana who is a former test cricketer is also a paid former employee of PCB, whereas Saleem Jaffer, the former fast bowler is first time holding any paid job with PCB.
All the circles have lauded the establishement of paid selection committee as a right step in the right direction. It is hoped that the exclusive focus of this committee would be on identifying and selecting the best players for the team. The biggest challenge for this committee would be to render a long term planning and the shaping out of a automatic mechanism through which the inflow of talented andn young players remains continue. One more of their daunting task would be to create and strengthen the bench strength of the team, which is currently literally non-existent.
Another good step is the enabling of paid selection committee to give its suggestion regarding the central contracts of the players on the performance of players, which is good step and will keep some sort of check and balance on the players.
Cricket board has also got a big responsibility in this regard. They have to give the fair and free hand to selection committee devoid of any pressure. In the past, in the honorary selection committee, there are myriad number of stories and allegations regarding the pressured selection in team. The previous funny committee was just a puppet in the hands of Inzamam-ul-Haq.
Surely, miracles wont happen in a jiffy and Pakistan wouldnt become the cricketing tiger in no time, but if the current step remains intact for a considerabe time, results are bound to show in the favour of Pakistan Cricket.More on:Cricket, honorary, paid, Pakistan, PCB, salahuddin sallu, saleem jaffar, selection, Shafqat Rana, Wasim Bari
