ICL: Indian Cricket League

Mendis After Murali

Written by Commoner on August 5th, 2008   (230 views)

There are four names in the world of cricket, which would always remain sparkling no matter what; Wasim Akram, Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan and Sachin Tendulkar. Nobody is ever likely to touch the greatness proved by these four maestros of the game. The zenith of their talent comes once in a century, and this century has just begun.

But perhaps in the case of Muttiah Muralitharan, this might prove untrue. As the glittering and shimmering sixteen years long career of spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan is coming to an end, Sri Lanka has apparently found his successor, and Muttiah Muralitharan himself is predicting about the resounding success of his likely predecessor.

The 23-year-old Ajantha Mendis has announced his arrival as Muralitharan’s heir apparent with a stunning start to his Test career in the current series against India. Mendis completed a ten-wicket match haul Sunday in just his second Test, having taken eight on debut in the series opener.

This is what the great Murali says about young Mendis,“When I started I was just an off spin bowler with a big turner. But he (Mendis) has a lot of variations and if he keeps calm and bowls he will take a lot of wickets in international cricket.”
