Kallis ton puts South Africa on top

kallisJacques Kallis hit a commanding century to put stuttering South Africa in a good position against India in the second One-day International (ODI) here on Wednesday.

Kallis hit an unbeaten 119 from 160 balls as the home side posted 248-8 after winning the toss. But his teammates were restricted to cameos, with only AB de Villiers (41) joining in a good stand, adding 87.

India had to chase the total under floodlights without opener Virender Sehwag, who has a sore finger.

In seaming early conditions, the hosts lost captain Graeme Smith in the second over. But they were cruising nicely at 150-3 when De Villiers was stumped attempting an expansive reverse sweep at left-armer Dinesh Mongia.

Kallis, who played and missed early, went on to complete his 15th century in his 239th One-day International (ODI).

Mark Boucher added a brisk 23 and number nine Andre Nel 22 from 12 balls, including a six off Ajit Agarkar from the fourth ball of the final over.

The hosts brought Charl Langeveldt in as an extra seamer, with spinner Robin Peterson missing out. Wasim Jaffer made his One-day International (ODI) debut for India in Sehwag’s absence.
