ICL: Indian Cricket League

ICL Doesn’t Match With KP

After money, the most touted argument by Kapil Dev & co in the favor of Indian Cricket League is that it will revolutionarize the game of cricket, as the Kerry Packer did in the decade of 70s.

It goes beyond that Kerry Packer really change the shape and approach of cricket. Kerry Packer not only added colors, charisma and glamour in the game, but also contributed a lot in the financial betterment of cricketers.

There is lots of difference between the Australian Kerry Packer and the Indian league. Packer launched the World Cricket Series (WCS) for its Australian television network channel nine, and influenced the cricket across the world. Kerry Packer introduced lots of new and fresh ideas and it was a really innovative and dynamic thing.

Its very hard for ICL to gain and exert that much influence as Kerry Packer did. The difference between ICL and Kerry Packer is huge in terms of quality of the game. Kerry Packer included lots of enticing attractions like rest of the world, the then-current Aussie players, and some former players.

Whereas in ICL, nobody really knows 95% of the players, and the known players are those which have either taken their retirement from the cricket, or those who have been ousted from their teams, or those who have been not in the form for last 10 years, or those who were just about to retire, or those who were misfits for the agile format of the game in the first place.

International Cricket Council has done well to initiate and support the twenty20 format of the game. In this speedy era, test matches are not that much popular, and nobody has the time and energy and will to sit for five days in the ground from sunrise to sunset, and watch a game, which is likely to get drawn. The impact of twenty20 format is electrifying and it not only amuses the spectators but also raises the quality of the game. It also keeps the player on their toes, and don’t take much of the toll.

In order to stop more mushrooming of rebel leagues like ICL, ICC should take some dynamic steps to make the game more flexible, agile and interesting. It should also render more facilities and perks to the players. Twenty20 is the most lethal weapon in the repertoire of ICC right now.
