England call up Lewis as Flintoff cover

flintofEngland called up Jon Lewis on Saturday as cover for all-rounder Andrew Flintoff for the next two One-day Internationals (ODIs) against India, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced.

Flintoff, making only his second England appearance this season after a third operation on his troublesome left ankle, suffered stiffness in his right knee while in the field during Friday’s second ODI here at Bristol where India won by nine runs to level the seven-match series at 1-1.

But that did not prevent pace bowler Flintoff, 29, from taking career-best figures of five for 56 in what was his 125th ODI.

However, a scan on Saturday revealed mild inflammation to his right knee and Flintoff was subsequently given a cortisone injection.

An ECB statement, added he would continue to be assessed by the England medical team on Sunday.

Lewis, who plays for Bristol-based Gloucestershire, will join the squad for Sunday’s practice session at Edgbaston where the third ODI is scheduled to take place on Monday.

The 31-year-old seam bowler has played 12 ODIs, the last against New Zealand at Adelaide in January, before the World Cup, and has taken 17 wickets at an average of 25.70.
