Caribbean rain annoys Lara

The West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara is raising concerns over the time that Test matches are scheduled to be played in the Caribbean.

Disappointed over the amount of time lost to rain in the current series against India so far, Lara expressed that matches in the Caribbean should be scheduled in earlier part of the year.

“We lost an entire day in St. Lucia, so it’s a bad time of the year to be playing cricket because it is June month. I don’t know why we are playing this time of the year and it has been happening for last four or five years (rain-interruptions). I think it is unfortunate,” Lara stated.

“There is no international cricket in the West Indies in February and March when the sun is out, but we just have to accept it because that is the situation,” the world triple record-holder added.

The drawn Test in St. Kitts — the country’s first — was hit by weather with play on opening day delayed until after lunch interval and entire post tea period on the second day being washed out. The second Test in St. Lucia was also badly hit by rain with the entire fourth day being abandoned without a ball being bowled.

The 2007 Cricket World Cup will take place in the Caribbean from March 11 to April 28.

Over the last few years, tours to the West Indies by India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka have been badly hit by rain and according to reports, costing the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) millions of dollars in losses.
