Though the cricket in Canada was introduced as early as 1759 by the British soldiers, it was George A. Barber, a young English schoolmaster who made the cricket spread in Canada in early nineteenth century, in the town of Toronto, in province of Ontario.

An important event in the history of Canadian cricket occurred on November 5, 1989 when the United Way Cricket Match held at the Toronto Sky Dome between the West Indies and a Rest of the World X1 attracted a staggering crowd of 40,570 to set a new attendance record for North America. It was also a bonanza for the United Way of Greater Toronto when a record total of $550,000 was raised for charity. Canada also hosted the International Cricket Council Trophy tournament in 2001 summer in Toronto and Canada reached to World Cup in South Africa 2003 after beating Holland and Namibia.

Canadian cricket team is considered to be the best in North America. Canada is an associate member of ICC and holds the One Day International playing status until 2009. Canada first appeared in world cup in 1979 and then in 2003. The Canadian cricket team has many outstanding and promising cricketers, including the captain John Davison. He can prove to be as dangerous a player as anyone could be on any given day. Umar Bhatti is the pick of bowlers having high arm action. Ashif Mulla is one of the more aggressive and brilliant batsman. The sure-treat to watch would be Abdool Samad. Now this boy has got some real talent. Andy Pick is the coach of the Canadian Cricket Team for ICC World Cup 2007.

Albeit, Canadians are minnows in International Cricket, in the presence of other players like Ashish Bagai and Kevin Sandher, they stand a good chance to entertain fans by putting up a decent fight. Batsmen Ian Billcliff and Geoff Barnett are also technically sound and have got a good temprament.

Other players in the Canadian outfit include Qaiser Ali, Desmond Chumney, George Codrington, Austin Codrington and Anderson Cummins.
