Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif returned to welcome form, as he captured three wickets for 67 runs in 22 overs, on the opening day of Leicestershire’s English County Championship Division Two match against Northamptonshire, here at the Oakham School Ground on Wednesday.

Elsewhere at Horsham, in a Division One match at the Cricketfield Road Ground, leaders Sussex were 348-8 after 100.3 overs playing against Middlesex with the close of play coming near.

There was an incredible 116 runs partnership for the eighth wicket in which Pakistan’s Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, switching from his role of a devastating bowler, turned into a master blaster as he hit 64 runs off just 51 balls with seven fours and two sixes.

After a somewhat lean run following a promising start for his county this summer, ASif began by removing both Northants opener with just nine runs on the board. The visitors then lifted themselves to a score of 331 before being all out.

A seventh-wicket stand of 140 runs lifted Northamptonshire from 144-6. Former South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener hit 122, in just short of four hours, off 163 balls with 17 fours and a six. His parner Ben Phillips made 72.
