Andrew Symonds quits all forms of cricket

February 17, 2012 | Cricket, General

The former Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds has announced that he is quitting all forms of professional cricket, citing family issues.

“Effective immediately, I am retiring from all forms of professional cricket,” Symonds said. “It is with regret that I will not be able to fulfill my final year of the IPL with the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians and the IPL have both been very supportive of me, but the impending arrival of my first child is a priority.”

Symonds, 36, is currently contracted to Mumbai Indians but his announcement means he will not turn out in the fifth season of the IPL.

He has not played international cricket since 2009 but represented several domestic teams in limited-overs cricket since. His last Twenty20 appearance was for Mumbai against New South Wales on October 2, 2011 during the Champions League Twenty20 in India.
